ART THERAPY FOR CHILDREN
Every experience is an important part of a child's development but it is impossible and detrimental to shelter and protect them every step of the way.
What are some problems a child could face?
Life's challenges are hard, especially so for children, take for example the following situations:
- Losing a friend, or finding it difficult to make friends;
- Death of a family member or loved one;
- Medical trauma;
- Bullying in school or after school;
- Academic stress and anxiety;
- Unable to focus during lesson, class or hates going to school;
- Emotional, physical or sexual abuse;
- Anger issues or sudden outbursts.
When exposed to stressful situations, children often find it difficult to regulate their strong emotions.
Hence, children may throw tantrums, react impulsively or withdraw from social interaction as they may have difficulty expressing themselves, not be able to verbalise or process those feelings and thoughts.
Why art therapy may be the best option for your child.
Some parents may find it difficult to understand or have their children put into words what they are feeling. By engaging in art therapy, children are given a safe place to express any complex feelings, thoughts and emotions through an enjoyable activity without words.
We help them build a strong support system.
This works on processing their emotions, which will enable and empower them to take control of their emotions better when faced with an overwhelming or difficult situation.
Through art therapy, they will learn to regulate their emotions, build resilience and gain the ability to overcome future difficulties on their own.
Here at Solace, our art therapists are highly trained and registered professionals who have extensive experience working with children.
Our therapy space is also a safe environment that allows self-expression and self-exploration, where children are free to express their innermost thoughts.
With gentle guidance from their art therapist, children can make meaning of their thoughts, feelings and emotions - developing greater self-awareness. Artistic skills or interest in art is not required as there are no criticisms or judgements - our therapeutic goals cater to each child's unique developmental needs.
